Sheffield’s
gay scene has had a bit of a kicking these last few months.
Though scorn was poured on its former Attercliffe home –
it was hardly the most picturesque or accessible of settings and
it did seem to suit the ‘out of sight, out of mind’
attitude adopted by many – at least it had a centre and
a scene of sorts.
But then a couple of years ago there was mutterings of a wish
to embrace the scene and mirror the success of Manchester’s
Gay Village.
Unfortunately talk of a city centre ‘scene’ was rather
premature and things seemed to have gone from bad to worse.
Freedom – the city centre’s only dedicated gay club
- shut and reopened as the straight Charles St.
The demise of the National Centre for Popular Music saw off popular
Poptastic night and the camped up Bar Miles is now the Buskers
Bar.
But there has been the odd chick of light at the end of the tunnel.
Fairy Likuid has been borne out of the end of Poptastic whilst
.Zero has regular Thursday night offerings.
Fingers crossed that things improve in the coming months and the
city has a much needed, cohesive scene.
