Live music venues
The demise of Sheffield’s National Centre for Popular Music did little to help the city’s live music scene.
Thankfully things have improved a bit of late with some class acts starting to come through once more and an ever-growing number of live music venues attracting capacity crowds.
If you want to know the full extent of the live scene – from where to play to what bands to look out for – get yourself a Dirty Stop Out’s Guide
Until then here’s a few recommendations:
Corporation
Art:Room
Tel: 0114 276 0262
1-3 Milton Street S1
www.corporation.org.uk
Just launched a brand new live room which should give this innovative venue the room it needs to offer even more quality acts.
In the past it has staged everything from major punk acts like The Damned to early nineties glam boys LA Guns on the comeback circuit.
Major festivals, generally top noise worth going deaf for.
Tel: 0114 2720070
29-31 Campo Lane S1
www.the-artroom.co.uk
Vibrant mix of art and live music that packs in the office workers at lunchtime. Quality happenings at night with regular DJs spinning chilled beats. Don’t miss the dinnertime pianist or regular jazz sessions.
The Casbah
Tel: 0114 275 6077
1 Wellington Street S1

Mid-week can be a hotbed of noisy new talent in this cellar club with alternative, beer-charged attitude.
Now pulling in a lot of established acts doing the rounds with stalwart punks like the UK Subs and GBH making recent appearances.

The former Hillsborough Baths,
Langsett Road, Hillsborough S6

Packs ’em in for anything from jam sessions to full blown battle of the bands events.

Hallam FM Arena
Tel: 0114 256 5656
Broughton Lane S9
www.hallamfmarena.co.uk
If you’ve got a spare £750,000 knocking about you might want to think about naming this venue in honour of a loved one.
Unfortunately you’ll have to wait five years as Hallam FM got there first, hence the new name and upping of the venue’s profile.
More gigs than ever in this massive venue that can shrink to accommodate smaller artistes.
From rock to retro, indie to ice hockey, it’s all here.
